Periodontics is a dental specialty recognized by the BC College of Dental Surgeons covering the treatment of your mouth's soft tissues such as gums, throat, tongue, cheeks and lips.
While teeth may be your primary concern when it comes to your oral health, your mouth's soft tissues also need care and attention to stay healthy.
When your mouth's soft tissues experience health issues like gum disease, they need periodontal treatment to prevent pain, infection, structural damage, and cascading oral health issues like missing teeth.
At Proactive Periodontics, Dr. Mandana Nematollahi and Dr. Yi Yang provide a range of periodontal services to patients from North Burnaby and Langley, East Vancouver, Surrey, Coquitlam and across the Lower Mainland.

FAQs About Periodontics
Questions about periodontics and periodontal treatments are always welcome! The following are some of the most common questions our doctors receive.
If you don't find your answer here, please call us or send a message through the form on our Book Appointment page.
-
What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist that specializes in the treatment of the soft tissues in your mouth, including your gums, cheeks, tongue and throat. This often involves addressing gum disease or placing dental implants to support restorations.
Periodontists need to have undergone extra training and education beyond standard dental school. This includes three years of extra education and certification with the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
-
What are periodontal treatments?
Since periodontics includes any dental procedure dealing with your gums or other soft tissues in your smile, there are a whole host of treatments that fall under the umbrella of periodontics.
Some examples of periodontic treatments include:
- Gum therapy
- Root scaling and planing
- Gum grafts
- Pocket irrigation (gingivectomy)
- Gum, cheek or lip grafts
- Dental Implants
-
When would I need a periodontist?
While many dentists are able to offer some periodontal services to their patients, they may call on the services of a specialized periodontist for cases that are complex or severe and would benefit from the extra education and training of a dental specialist.
This may include the treatment of severe gum disease, assessing the health of your mouth's soft tissue if you are a smoker, placing a dental implant, or standard periodontal treatments if you are at risk of heart disease and other conditions closely associated with periodontal disease.
-
How do I know if I need a periodontist?
The best way to determine whether or not your smile would benefit from periodontal attention from a specialist is to ask your dentist. If your primary care dentist thinks that your oral health has some complexities that could warrant a periodontist's involvement, they will refer you to one in your area.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms of severe periodontal disease, make sure to ask your dentist about periodontal treatment:
- Bleeding, swollen or receding gums
- Loose teeth
- A change in your bite (how your upper and lower teeth come into contact with each other)
- Pain or discomfort within, around or underneath your gums.
-
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is one of the most common varieties of periodontal health issue found in our patients' smiles.
Your gums serve as a seal around your teeth, protecting the sensitive root areas. No matter the condition of your teeth they require healthy gums to support them. Gum disease occurs when there is an infection in the tissues that support the teeth.
Gum disease can cause symptoms such as:
- Sore or swollen gums
- Receding gums
- Red or purple gums
- Bleeding in your gums
- Persistent bad breath
The symptoms of gum disease depend largely on the stage and severity of a given case. If you are experiencing severe symptoms of gum disease, it may be time to contact a periodontist for treatment.
-
What is a soft tissue (gum) graft?
During an oral soft tissue grafting procedure, a periodontist transplants a small piece of specialized tissue from one part of your body to another that requires extra tissue because of trauma or recession.
The most common grafting procedure performed by Dr. Mandana Nematollahi is a gum graft, where she takes tissue from the top of your mouth and grafts it to the part of your smile where your gums have receded. causing sensitivity and instability in your teeth.
-
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that replaces the root of a missing tooth. This screw is placed in your smile where the tooth has been lost. After a recovery period, a dental restoration like dentures a bridge or a crown will be attached to the implant.
Implants can create replacement teeth that look, feel, and function very closely to that of a natural tooth.
Dental implants can replace a single lost tooth or multiple missing teeth, and may address many oral health issues.
Because the placement procedure for a dental implant involves cutting through the gums of your smile to access the bone, a periodontist is often called upon to perform the surgery.
-
Why choose a periodontist for your dental implants?
The procedure for placing a dental implant involves surgical cuts made to your gums as well as embedding the implant into the jaw bone.
A periodontist has received specialized training in treating both the gums and bones of your smile, including how to handle them in surgical situations and how to encourage safe and effective healing.
Because of this, periodontists like Dr. Mandana Nematollahi and Dr. Yi Yang are specially qualified to provide dental implant treatments to their patients.
